Momentary Devices

Momentary Devices weaves together film and video projections, photographs, machines, found objects and sound. The work becomes an extension and substitute for human behavior and questions our own impermanence.

By using projected images, either that of the camera obscura or video projection I’m interested in the transitory nature that the work takes on. The sculptural aspect of the work is just as important as it provides a housing and structure for the images. The three-dimensional objects used are both found and fabricated. The found object for me is loaded  with history and purpose. I have a reverence for objects of the past and the parts and mechanisms that defined the original function.

I often use parts from antiquated photographic equipment and rework them so they become part of a new apparatus. For example an old enlarging lens that once projected images on to photographic paper  is now being used in a camera obscura to project a found photograph onto a screen (Transitory Portrait). In another piece an old slide projector is taken apart, it’s fan and motor used to inflate a bag where a video is projected (Inflate). This work is hybrid in nature and celebrates the printed, projected and multi-faceted image.
